Did you know that June babies have not one, but three birthstones? No, we didn't either! But now we're all caught up, we want to talk to you about June's third birthstone, Moonstone.

This gorgeous shimmering gem received her name from the Roman natural historian Pliny, who noted the stone's changing glimmer with the shifting phases of the moon. 

What colours do moonstones come in?

Moonstones come in a multitude of delicate shades including white, blue, grey, peach and rainbow. Each displays a beautiful watery opaque quality with a silvery-white reflection like the moon's beams dancing across crystal clear waters. (We can be so poetic when we want to be!). It is this serene imagery of the stone that leads to its association with calming and balancing energies.

The history of moonstones

Moonstone jewellery can be traced back to the Romans, some 2,000 years ago, and there is even evidence of pieces dating further back across Asia and India. Wherever and whenever she has been worn, moonstone has always been tied to love and safety. In India, moonstone ornaments and moonstone jewellery are traditional wedding gifts and in Europe's Art Nouveau period, the stone was worn in the belief of reuniting estranged lovers. Believing to bring protection, particularly at night, moonstone in also known as the traveller's stone.

Where do moonstones come from? 

Moonstones are found in Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Australia, Madagascar and the United States. Fine quality moonstones are considered to be close to transparent with a hint of blue shimmer and are typically sourced from Sri Lanka. India's moonstones typically display more brown, green or orange hues and are more abundant in supply so tend to be more affordable.

What is moonstone used for?

Aside from simply beautiful jewellery, moonstone can be used to bring hope, safety, love and fertility. It is a calming stone, used to bring stress relief and restore balance to the body.
